Postcode analysis has been underway in the Learning and Skills Sector for a number of years now and preliminary analysis shows strong relationships between socio-economic background as measured by classifications such as MOSAIC and application and success measures in Further Education. However, given the wealth of sector specific data from the LSDA, UCAS, HESA and others, research has begun to produce a bespoke classification building on the generic MOSAIC product - an Education MOSAIC. With the release of the new census, timing is perfect to begin exploring the potential for such a product. Marc Farr will give a presentation on: the background of attempts to build such a product; examples from other sectors where this exercise has proved useful; and some initial results in developing the classification. Whilst it is not [to] be positioned as a panacea for researchers in this area to replace other postcode level measures and indices of multiple deprivation, it is proposed that a sector specific classification with groupings and descriptions geared to learning and skills should prove a valuable research tool for policymakers and practitioners.
